Largest Christmas Tree

Once again, the world’s largest Christmas tree will be standing proud in the middle of the Hansaplatz square until the end of the year. It comprises around 1000 Norway spruce trees from the nearby Sauerland forests. The huge tree is lit up by 48,000 fairy lights and plenty of other sparkly decorations. It is all topped off by the traditional four metre tall angel.

If you are coming by car, we have something special for you this year: the Dortmund Christmas City EXPRESS”! The offer is valid on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 25 November up to and including 23 December (each day starting at 11 am). Here’s how it works: Park your car on the E3 car park at the Westfalenhallen (7 Euros parking fee; Navi: “Victor-Toyka-Straße, 44139 Dortmund”) and go to the “Remydamm” station right next to the car park, and take the U45 tram heading to “Fredenbaum”. All of you – and that means everyone who came with you in the car – can travel straight to the Christmas City, and all for free!

After 8 minutes the tram arrives at Kampstrasse underground station which puts you right at the heart of Dortmund’s Christmas City. And even more special – show your car park ticket at the Christmas Market food-stands and you can get 10% off food and drink. Your trip back to the car park (take the U45 heading to Westfalenhallen) is also covered by the ticket. Get off at the Remydamm stop again. An early Christmas present for you!

PS: The ticket for “Dortmund Christmas City EXPRESS” covers a trip between “Remydamm” and “Dortmund Hauptbahnhof” (Central Station), in case you fancy a ride a little further than “Kampstrasse”.

Illuminations: back for 2022

This year, Dortmund’s Christmas City illuminations are even more festive than ever. Walk along Kampstrasse, between the Petri Church and the Reinoldi Church, and you’ll see some fantastical illuminations and light installations. It all gets started opposite the station at the gateway to the Christmas City at the bottom of the Katherinen Steps. Later on you’ll be treated to coalmine scenes complete with pit-head tower and a horse drawn beer wagon. And on top of all the installations from 2021, there are two new ones to look out for this year as well. Surprises galore!

Speaking of lights: In light of the energy crisis, the illumination of the Christmas Market in Dortmund is reduced to 8 hours per day, from 3pm to 11pm. Most of the lighting, including the light installations mentioned above, are LED lamps.
