Skywalk: View over Dortmund with an industrial backdrop

A line of colourful helmets bob along in line like toy ducklings as they climb up the fenced-in steps to the top – 99 steps in all. They remind us of the workers starting their shifts here in times gone by. Although then their helmets were probably sooty grey rather than bright and colourful!

Where are on earth are all these people with helmet’s on their heads off to? They are following a tour guide on the Dortmund Skywalk – an old blast furnace gas pipeline 26 metres above the ground on the former PHOENIX West industrial site in Dortmund’s Hörde district.

The gas pipeline starts near the Warsteiner Music Hall, Dortmund's newest concert hall, and leads to the former blast furnace. This ruin is a monument to Dortmund's industrial heritage. From the steel platforms along the old pipeline you have a magnificent view over Dortmund – you can see the stadium, the Florian Tower in Westfalenpark and the Bergmann Brewery opposite, which is, by the way, a great place to retire to for refreshments afterwards.

Even higher: climb the blast furnace in Dortmund

All you adventurers out there – if you don’t suffer from vertigo - can also continue the tour to the top of the old blast furnace itself. Sturdy footwear and weatherproof clothing are a must; and you have to be fit too – because at a height of 65 metres there are rather a lot of stairs to climb before you reach the top.

But the view and the journey into the past make it well worth the effort! You can also book individual tours for groups. People have even made their marriage proposals up here, high above Dortmund. That’s romance, Ruhr valley style!

The skywalk guides you to the furnance at PHOENIX West.
