Westpark Dortmund: power jogging, dancing or just chill

The dappled sunshine plays on your face. The birds are singing in the trees. The sound of laughter drifts across the grass. You lie back on a rug in Dortmund’s Westpark and close your eyes. It’s no wonder that it is so peaceful here, as Westpark is a former cemetery. And the park still features grave stones and monuments.

But today the park is also full off life, it is a popular meeting place for mainly young people, students and families. They barbecue at the special barbecue areas, spread out their picnics and play football or throw frisbees. The special Finnenbahn track is also a great place for jogging. Dogs also have their fun here at the designated dogs’ playground. A few metres further on, people are enjoying a quiet meal in the adjacent restaurant or drinking a cool beer in the beer garden after work.

Westpark: an oasis in the centre of the city

As you relax in this green oasis you might be lucky enough to see one of the many park rabbits hopping by. Westpark is located in the artists' quarter of Unionviertel and is very close to the city centre. From here it is only a stone’s throw to the shopping street, Westenhellweg.

But in the park, city life seems far away. Children romp and climb in the two playgrounds. Other visitors are bouldering, playing table tennis and some are actually dancing! - as the city has financed a wooden dance floor in the park. And if you're wondering about all the mosaics: Artist Janine Despaigne has embellished many corners of the park with her beautiful mosaic art. How perfect then, that an art market also takes place here every year. Another major event is the Westparkfest, which includes a flea market and live music.
